Confirm that you need a visitor visa

Check Canada's official entry-document tool before applying. The document you need depends on factors including your nationality, travel document and method of travel.

Check your eligibility

Visitor visa applicants must meet Canada's temporary resident requirements. Among other things, you must satisfy the immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay and that you have enough money for your visit.

Decide the purpose of your trip

Your purpose might be tourism, visiting family or friends, attending an event, or another temporary visit. Your reason for travelling affects the supporting documents IRCC may require.

Prepare your passport and documents

• Valid passport or travel document
• Documents explaining the purpose of your visit
• Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay
• Evidence relevant to your ties outside Canada
• Invitation letter when applicable
• Any additional documents shown on your personalized IRCC checklist

Show that you can afford your trip

IRCC does not use one fixed visitor-visa funds amount for every applicant. The amount you need depends on factors such as the length of your visit and whether you will stay in a hotel or with friends or relatives.

Apply online through IRCC

Visitor visa applications normally must be submitted online. Create or sign in to the appropriate IRCC portal, complete the application, upload the requested documents and pay the applicable fees.

Give biometrics if required

If biometrics are required, IRCC will send you a biometric instruction letter. Follow the instructions and book an appointment at an official biometric collection location.

Wait while IRCC processes your application

Processing times vary. IRCC may request additional information and, depending on your circumstances, may ask for an interview, medical examination or police certificate.

If approved, follow the passport instructions

For an approved online application, IRCC sends instructions about submitting your passport. You cannot travel using the approval message alone; the visitor visa must be placed in the passport before travel.

Carry your passport and relevant travel documents. Having a visitor visa allows you to travel to a Canadian port of entry, but a border services officer makes the final decision about admission and the authorized period of stay.
